Elizabeth Perry Montessori School

“..And so we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the experiences in which the child acts on his environment.  The teacher’s task is not to talk, but to prepare and arrange a series of motives for cultural activity in a special environment made for the child.”

Elizabeth Perry Montessori School had its start in 1988 in Portland, Oregon.  In 1995, the school moved to its current location on the campus of the Forest Grove United Methodist Church, where it has served children and parents for the past 23 years.

According to eastern philosophies, there are 4 stages of life.

The first stage represents the student’s stage of life.  This is where you study hard to prepare yourself and lay the foundation for your life’s work.

The second stage (after age 25) is where you will practice your work and establish a home.  This stage is where you might even get married and raise children to prepare the next generation.

The third stage represents the retirement age where you retire and have more time to serve others and do more for humanity.

The fourth phase of life is a resting time, which allows you to reflect in old age about the mysteries of life.

It is time for me to enter the third stage.  My past 32 years (23 years in Forest Grove) have been serving children and families by establishing and maintaining an environment where children could explore the world through their senses.  From math, language, history, geography, science, practical life and right human relationships, children at EPMS were able to explore and discover within their own being the relationships this world has to offer.  I could not have asked for better teachers then the 3-6 and 6-12 year olds we have had throughout our years past.  Each of their discoveries became a new spark within me.  I hope that each child we had the honor to serve shares their love of learning with others on their path.

I will retire on  May 31,2019 at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.  I believe the timing is right for a new Directress that can continue offering the Montessori Method to the Parents and Children of the Forest Grove and surrounding areas.  Carly Conroy is establishing her own school, Forest Grove Montessori, at the same location of EPMS.  You can contact her at www.forestgrovemontessori.com

Montessori Farm Camp at Ox Hill Homestead is still active and we look forward to serving children at our farm during the summer months.
